October is here, and you know what that means—it’s spooky season! There’s no better time to immerse yourself in some chilling horror games. If you’re not ready to tackle your ever-growing backlog, why not explore these eight exciting new releases set to launch this month? From psychological horrors to gory platformers and intense zombie shooters, there’s something for every type of horror fan!
Until Dawn Remake – October 4th
Developers: Ballistic Moon
Back in 2015, Until Dawn made a huge splash in the horror space, putting Supermassive Games on the map with its gripping cinematic horror style. Since then, they’ve expanded on their signature formula with The Dark Pictures Anthology, offering shorter, disconnected horror stories, and even collaborated with Dead by Daylight on The Casting of Frank Stone.
Now, with Sony holding onto the IP, they’ve brought in Ballistic Moon to remaster Until Dawn. Aside from graphical improvements, some scenes have also been reworked. Naturally, there’s been some debate online about whether a remake is really needed, especially since the original still holds up so well. But honestly, I’m just excited to finally see the game coming to PC — it’s been a long wait!
Silent Hill 2 Remake – October 8th
Developers: Bloober Team SA
Sticking with the theme of remakes, Silent Hill 2 Remake is arriving this month. Step back into the fog-shrouded town of Silent Hill as you follow James Sunderland on his iconic emotional journey. Alongside a complete visual overhaul, the developers have teased a new over-the-shoulder camera perspective, an updated combat system, and expanded environments that include previously inaccessible locations.
This remake comes from Bloober Team, the talented developers behind the Layers of Fear series and the Blair Witch game.
RetroRealms: Halloween and Ash vs Evil Dead – October 18th
Developer: WayForward Technologies
Available on: PlayStation, Xbox, Switch, PC
RetroRealms Arcade is set to launch in October 2024, bringing an exciting collection of brand-new arcade games featuring iconic horror franchises. This 16-bit pixel art game features gory side-scrolling combat and a very nostalgic aesthetic.
At launch, players can dive into two thrilling licensed arcade experiences: Halloween and Ash vs. Evil Dead. Both games are available separately or as a “Double Feature” bundle for those who can’t decide. With online leaderboards and hidden collectibles to discover, RetroRealms Arcade is shaping up to be a must-play this Halloween season for fans of retro aesthetics and arcade-style gameplay!
Fear the Spotlight – October 22nd
Developers: Cozy Game Pals
Available on: PlayStation, Xbox, Switch, PC
If you’re a fan of old-school survival horror, Fear the Spotlight should definitely be on your radar in October. A few months ago at Summer Games Fest, the iconic horror movie production company Blumhouse announced that it was venturing into horror game publishing, and Fear the Spotlight is their first title.
In Fear the Spotlight, you play as Vivian, a student whose crush Amy disappears after a seance gone horribly wrong. As you explore your eerie, abandoned school to find her, you’ll be stalked by a nightmarish creature with—you guessed it—a spotlight for a head. The tension and slow-burn horror will keep you on edge as you unravel the supernatural mystery behind Amy’s disappearance. But fortunately for people who aren’t fans of horror games, Fear the Spotlight won’t feature any jumpscares!
Forest Hills: The Last Year – 22nd October
Developers: Undaunted Games Incorporated
Available on: PC
In an era where asymmetric multiplayer horror games often emerge only to fizzle out within months or years, one might assume developers would shy away from challenging the dominance of Dead by Daylight. Perhaps I’m just a bit too cynical.
Enter Forest Hills: The Last Year, a brand-new 5v1 multiplayer horror experience. Players can choose to be “Displaced” survivors, tasked with crafting weapons to fight back against the “Fiend”, or take on the role of the Fiend that is hunting them down. Fiends each have their own unique weapons, powers and play-styles.
The developers have said that they are committed to regular content updates, introducing new Fiends, maps, and gameplay optimizations to keep the experience fresh.
No More Room in Hell 2 – 22nd October
Developers: Torn Banner Studios
Available on: PC
No More Room in Hell 2 is a thrilling cooperative multiplayer survival horror game set in a post-apocalyptic world teeming with zombies. This game offers a more gritty and realistic zombie shooting experience than Left 4 Dead and Back 4 Blood. You’ll need to scavenge for resources, meticulously manage your ammunition, and collaborate with up to seven friends to fend off relentless hordes.
The game begins with you and your teammates scattered across a vast map. To survive the larger hordes, you’ll need to reunite and communicate via the in-game proximity chat. The stakes are high: with a permadeath system in place, any character death results in the loss of all gear and progress. The game enters the Steam Early Access program on October 22nd.
Slay the Princess: The Pristine Cut – 24th October
Developers: Black Tabby Games
Available on: PC, PlayStation, Xbox, Switch
One of the standout indie horror games of the year is undoubtedly Slay the Princess. This chilling and dark visual novel draws players into a gripping narrative that unfolds in unexpected ways. While I won’t delve too deeply into the plot to avoid spoilers, the central task is simple yet haunting: you must slay the Princess hidden in the basement of a secluded cabin in the woods. However, she’ll try to trick you, charm you, kill you – anything to stop you from slaying her.
The upcoming Pristine Cut expands the game by approximately 35% – with new Princesses, dialogue, artwork and more. Additionally, this update brings the thrilling tale of Slay the Princess to new audiences, as it’s releasing on PlayStation, Xbox, and Nintendo Switch.
The Coma 2B: Catacomb – October 25th
Developers: Dvora Studio
Available on: PlayStation, Xbox, Switch, PC
The Coma 2B: Catacomb is also set to release this month. This side-scrolling Korean survival horror adventure features a striking hand-illustrated art style that immerses players in the eerie district of Sehwa.
As you explore this haunting environment, you’ll have the opportunity to uncover the mysteries that connect The Coma 1 and The Coma 2: Vicious Sisters. This instalment serves as a vital bridge, explaining the events between those two games and deepening the lore of the series.
And that’s 7 horror games coming out in October 2024. Which game will you be checking out? If you’re not feeling any of the games above, keep a look out for next month’s article, and we’re sure there will be something for you.
