The Sinking City Remastered Just Dropped – And It’s Free for Existing Players

Jay DaviesNewsMay 13, 2025

Fans of Frogwares’ Lovecraftian detective game, The Sinking City, just got a fantastic Tuesday surprise. The Sinking City Remastered has surprise-dropped today, May 13th, for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S, which is far earlier than expected! And best of all, it’s completely free for existing owners of the game on these platforms.

Originally released in 2019, The Sinking City is a supernatural open-world mystery that puts players in the shoes of a private investigator navigating a flooded, otherworldly city inspired by H.P. Lovecraft’s work.

What’s New in the Remaster?

The new remastered version has been rebuilt using Unreal Engine 5 and delivers a fresh visual experience along with several quality-of-life updates.

  • Game fully relit in Unreal Engine 5
  • Enhanced locations with additional levels of detail and objects
  • 4K textures and improved reflections
  • Photo Mode
  • Support for DLSS, FSR and TSR upscaling
  • Various gameplay adjustments, certain accessibility features and more

Frogwares also released a new trailer showcasing the visual leap from the original to the remaster.

What If Your PC Can’t Handle the Upgrade?

While the remaster delivers a major step up in graphics and performance, Frogwares hasn’t forgotten players with older or lower-end systems. On Steam, both the original and remastered versions of The Sinking City will remain accessible to existing owners. This means players whose systems can’t comfortably run the Unreal Engine 5 version will still be able to enjoy the original release.

A Gift to the Fans

The remaster was originally announced in March 2025 as part of the Kickstarter campaign for The Sinking City 2, which wrapped in April with enormous success. Frogwares hit their initial funding goal in under two hours and ended the campaign with over €553,000 (approx. $627,000)—more than 450% of their original target.

“We plan to do big things with The Sinking City IP, starting with the sequel and then beyond,” said Sergiy Oganesyan, Publishing Director at Frogwares. “After our rather well-known struggles with the original, it feels amazing to have this positive moment be part of the game’s twisted history… Making it free to all our existing fans is our way of giving back.”

With the remaster now live and The Sinking City 2 officially on the way, it’s a good time to get your detective shoes on and dive back into to the franchise.
